At the beginning of each field season I set a few goals in order to gage whether each season was a success. In a previous post I listed my goals for the Mopsos Survey as: become proficient enough in GIS to create maps for my votive offering project and get a handle on the Roman pottery from the survey to determine if I want to take it on for a subsequent publication. With the help of Pete van Rossum I now feel comfortable enough to create maps for certain research projects. The Issus project was a huge success and I plan to incorporate GIS in the future.
After speaking with the Mopsos site directors I now have a clear research goal for the Roman pottery from Cilicia. For the next year or two I will take on the Hellenistic through early Roman finewares (up to the first century A.D.). I will create a ceramic typological analysis of the fineware, which will be published in a separate chapter in the site’s monograph. It is a great opportunity for me professionally and I look forward to the challenge. Therefore I am happy to report that both the Cyprus and Turkey field seasons as resounding successes. The next three days I will be sightseeing in Istanbul and unable to blog. Be back in a few days.
